Shell of a new build with a concrete foundation and rising blockwork walls under an open sky

Ingenieurbüro Müller, Heinsberg

Structural design for new builds in Heinsberg, from the ground to the ridge

We design the load bearing structure of your new build in the order in which it is actually built: foundations, floors, walls, roof. You receive the structural calculation, the construction drawings and the certificates the site works from.

Reachable Mon to Fri, 9 to 18.

  • Structural design Structural calculations for masonry and concrete, timber and steel.
  • Construction drawings Framing plans, formwork drawings and reinforcement drawings from one office.
  • Certificates Thermal protection, moisture protection, sound insulation and seismic verification.

Level by level

How the structure comes together, from the bottom up

A new build is not calculated in one go. It grows, and the structural design grows with it. Every level carries the next, and what is decided at the bottom decides what is still possible at the top.

Assembly diagram

  1. Ground and foundations

The ground conditions and the loads of the house decide the foundation: strip footings, a raft slab or pad footings. This is where it is settled what everything else stands on.

  2. Basement slab and plinth

Earth pressure from outside, the loads of the storeys from above. Basement walls and the basement slab are sized so that the loads are passed on cleanly.

  3. Floor slabs

Span, thickness, reinforcement, deflection. Every floor is calculated for its imposed load, and out of that come the formwork and reinforcement drawings the site works from.

  4. Walls and bracing

Load bearing walls, columns, downstand beams and lintels. Plus the bracing that keeps the building stiff against wind and other horizontal loads.

  5. Roof structure

Rafters, purlins, collar beams or trusses. Wind and snow arrive at the top and are carried all the way back down into the foundations, where the calculation began.

From the first line to the finished shell

The sequence, in the order you will live through it

Structural design rarely stands alone. It hangs on the design, on the shell contractor and on dates that cannot be moved. This order has proved itself.

  1. First conversation and documents

You send us the design drawings, the details of the plot and, if there is one, the ground investigation report. We tell you what is still missing.

  2. Preliminary sizing

Rough sections for slabs, columns and footings. That shows early whether the design carries or whether a wall should still move.

  3. Framing plan and structural calculation

Every load bearing element gets its position and its calculation. This is the document that is checked, and the basis for everything that follows.

  4. Formwork drawings

Dimensions, openings and levels for the concrete. The formwork drawing is the sheet that is in someone hands on site while the formwork goes up.

  5. Reinforcement drawings

Layer by layer, with a bar schedule. On site it is then clear which steel belongs where, before the concrete arrives.

  6. With you until the shell stands

Questions out of the works, changes on site, approvals. We stay reachable until the shell is standing.

Certificates and building physics

What a new build needs besides stability

Structural work comes with certificates that are often noticed late and then cost time. We prepare them in the same office so that nothing has to be collected together at the end.

Structural engineer in a hard hat holding a drawing in front of a finished concrete wall
Thermal protection
The certificate covering the thermal performance of the building, in winter as in summer.
Moisture protection
Building elements are checked for condensation and moisture behaviour before they are built in.
Sound insulation
Certificates for floors, separating walls and external elements to the applicable requirements.
Seismic verification
Where the seismic zone calls for it, the structure is additionally checked for horizontal loads.

Masonry and concrete, timber and steel are all calculated in the same office. A mixed structure therefore needs no handover between two practices.

Common questions

What clients ask before the first spade goes in

Six answers that come before most of the calls.

When does a new build need a structural design?

As soon as a building has load bearing elements, its stability has to be verified. For a new build the structural calculation is part of the documents submitted for the project.

When should the engineering office come in?

As early as possible, ideally with the design. Long spans, open plans and long window bands can be solved cheaply at the beginning and only expensively later.

Which documents do you need from me?

Design drawings with plans, sections and elevations, the details of the plot and, if it exists, the ground investigation report. If something is missing we will say so in the first conversation.

What belongs to the structural work?

The framing plan and the structural calculation, plus the construction drawings: formwork and reinforcement drawings. On request the certificates for thermal protection, moisture protection and sound insulation.

Do you also design in timber and steel?

Yes. Masonry and concrete, timber and steel are calculated in the same office, including where they meet in one building.

Do I need a ground investigation report?

The foundation is sized for the ground it sits on. Without a report the calculation has to work from safe assumptions, and that usually means more concrete and more steel.
